Meet One of Our Account Executives: Interview with Harmony Healthcare’s JJ Downum

What’s on your wish list for the next 5 years?

  • Go to the Masters (preferably another Tiger W)
  • Catch my first tarpon
  • Watch LeBron James v Michael Jordan in a game of 1-on-1 so the debate will finally be settled
  • Buy a boat

What is your favorite memory from your childhood or adolescence?

Baseball. I learned the game from my dad and grandpa. I played with my best friends from little league through college. A lot of the best times I had growing up start with baseball or a friendship that started with the game.

JJ Downum

What do you see for the future of the healthcare industry in the coming year?

More technology! From innovative treatments to better compliance and billing practices, technology is associated in every aspect of healthcare.

Hospitals and health systems that have a consolidated technological platform allow their employees to document and communicate better. This leads to better patient care and population health, and that’s the name of the game.

Describe what helps you thrive in the workplace.

I’d have to say the relationships I’ve built with my colleagues.  I lean on a lot a people throughout the workweek here at Harmony for insight, advice, industry knowledge, etc. Being able to share ideas and help clients because of those relationships is very empowering.

Create the soundtrack to your life in 5 songs. What makes each song representative of your journey?

  • “Night Moves” by Bob Seger (This is my favorite song of all-time. It really takes me back to high school/college, and it plays in any setting.)
  • “Big Poppa” by The Notorious B.I.G. (Shout out to the movie Hardball for the introduction when I was 10! This is my favorite hip-hop song for 18 years and counting.)
  • “Whiskey River” by Willie Nelson (Willie has always been the first song of the weekend on fishing trips with my dad since I was 3 years old.)
  • “Your Love” by The Outfield (This takes me back to spring break 2009.)
  • “September” by Earth, Wind & Fire (Instant mood changer and absolute jam!)
  • “Margaritaville” by Jimmy Buffett (If it’s 75+ degrees, this song is in the rotation.)
  • “With A Little Help From My Friends” by The Beatles (I think the title says it all.)
  • “It’s A Great Day To Be Alive” by Travis Tritt (It’s an older song that reminds me of my family. Great words to live by!)

You said an 8-song soundtrack, right?

Tell us about one lesson you’ve learned in the past month.

Completely unrelated to work and I’m sure a lot of people will disagree, but I have learned that I will always be a Jameis Winston believer. #GoBucs

What is the most important part of your morning routine to help you kick start the day?

Either a podcast or music depending on the day. I’m not really a morning person, so I typically go with something funny for a podcast or upbeat music to get the energy flowing.

What’s your favorite movie quote and why?

“So I jump ship in Hong Kong and I make my way over to Tibet, and I get on as a looper at a course over in the Himalayas. A looper, you know, a caddy, a looper, a jock. So, I tell them I’m a pro jock, and who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama, himself. Twelfth son of the Lama. The flowing robes, the grace, bald… striking. So, I’m on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one – big hitter, the Lama – long, into a 10,000 foot crevasse, right at the base of this glacier. Do you know what the Lama says? ‘Gunga galunga… gunga, gunga-lagunga.’ So we finish the 18th, and he’s gonna stiff me. And I say, ‘Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know.’ And he says, ‘Oh, uh, there won’t be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness.’ So I got that goin’ for me, which is nice.”

– Carl Spackler from Caddyshack

Hilarious and completely improvised.
