The annual AHIMA conference was held September 14-18 in Chicago, IL. The conference took on a new name this year: it went from AHIMA Convention and Exhibit to Health Data and Information Conference, as the industry continues to evolve and focus more on data driven analytics.

The conference provided a good showing for the data side of the industry in addition to it’s classic draw of mid-revenue cycle and clinical leaders. This year was no different with over 4500 attendees.

Insightful approaches to the industry

Attendees had insightful education sessions, site visits, keynote speakers, roundtables, networking events, and more available to them. AHIMA19 targeted a few critical healthcare topics:

  • Clinical documentation improvement with focus on CV denials, documentation integrity and utilizing data to optimize results
  • Innovation highlighted by leveraging technology, AI automation of the revenue cycle, and consumer-driven health
  • Continuum of care which takes a walk through the entire patients journey and how transforming quality of care through technology

Our work here at Harmony Healthcare is primarily run through virtual avenues such as phone, email, and screen shares. One of the best things about this year’s conference was the ability to meet our clients, partners, and consultants face-to-face. This gave us the ability to discuss on a different level what is happening throughout the industry.

The talk of the industry

Going with the conference trend, denials management remained at the forefront of most conversations. Through the end of last year, the two-midnight rule changes have been the dominant driver of denials. Payers are adapting, and their new focus requires a different strategy and expertise.

A focus on clinical documentation improvement was also prevalent with focus on the mentions above and more. Additional hot topics included:

  • coding audits
  • physician practice support
  • revenue cycle optimization
  • the transformation of how health data and information is viewed throughout the industry
